Updated: July 5, 2018

This Cookie Statement explains how fTLD Registry Services, LLC (“fTLD,” “we,” or “us”) uses cookies and similar technologies in the course of its business, including through our websites, such as https://www.ftld.com, https://www.register.bank, and https://www.register.insurance, or any website owned, operated or controlled by us (collectively, the “Sites”), and when customers open or interact with emails delivered through our Services. It explains what these technologies are and why we use them, as well as your rights to specify our use of them. This Cookie Statement is and will be treated as part of our Terms of Use, and is automatically incorporated therein.  Capitalized terms used and not otherwise defined in this Cookie Statement have the meanings given to those terms in our Privacy Policy.

In some cases we may use cookies and other tracking technologies described in this Cookie Statement to collect Personal Information or to collect information that becomes Personal Information if we combine it with other information. For information about how we process your Personal Information, please consult our Privacy Policy.

What are cookies?

Cookies are small data files that are placed on your computer or mobile device when you visit a website and uniquely identify your device allowing a website to keep records of its return visitors, customize your browsing experience, and/or deliver ads targeted to you.  Cookies are widely used by online service providers to (for example) make their websites or services work or make them work more efficiently, as well as to provide reporting information.

Cookies set by the website owner or service provider (in this case, fTLD) are called “first-party cookies”. Cookies set by parties other than the website owner are called “third-party cookies.” Third party cookies enable third-party features or functionality to be provided on or through the website or service you are using (such as advertising, interactive content and analytics). The third-parties that set these third-party cookies can recognize your computer or mobile device both when it visits the website or service in question and also when it visits certain other websites or services.

Why do we use cookies and other tracking technologies?

We use first-party and third-party cookies for several reasons. Some cookies are required for technical reasons for our Sites and Services to operate, and we refer to these as “strictly necessary” cookies. Other cookies enable us and the third-parties we work with to track and target the interests of visitors to our Sites, and we refer to these as “performance” and “functional” cookies. For example, we use cookies to tailor content and information that we may send or display to you and otherwise personalize your experience while interacting with our Sites and to otherwise improve the functionality of the Services we provide. We also enable third-parties to serve cookies and similar tracking technologies through our Sites and Services for advertising, analytics, and for other purposes. This is described below in more detail.

Cookies served through our Sites

The specific types of first- and third-party cookies served through our Sites and the purposes they perform are described in further detail below:

Strictly Necessary Cookies

These cookies are strictly necessary to provide you with services available through our Sites and to use some of their features.  Because these cookies are necessary for the website to function, they cannot be switched off in our systems and you cannot refuse them without impacting how our Sites function. They are usually only set in response to actions made by you which amount to a request for services, such as setting your privacy preferences, logging in, or filling in forms. You may be able to block or delete them by changing your browser settings, as described under the heading “How can I control cookies?” in the Cookie Statement, but some parts of the site will not then work. These cookies allow us to remember choices you make on our Sites, such as the country from which you are visiting, and provide enhanced features.

Performance and Functionality Cookies

These cookies are used to enhance the performance and functionality of our Sites but are non-essential to their use. However, without these cookies, certain functionality may become unavailable. These cookies enable the website to provide enhanced functionality and personalization, as well as count traffic sources, clicks, visits, etc. to measure and improve the performance of our Sites. They may be set by us or by third-party providers whose services we have added to our Sites, and may be shared with third parties to assist us in understanding the usage patterns for certain content, services, advertisements, promotions, and/or functionality on the Sites. If you do not allow these cookies, then some or all of these services may not function properly.

Analytics, Targeting, and Other Cookies

These cookies may be set through our Sites by our third-party service providers (e.g., advertising partners, ad networks) to display advertising on our Sites and to manage and serve advertising on other sites. They do not store Personal Information, but are based on uniquely identifying your browser and device. They also perform functions like preventing the same ad from continuously reappearing, ensuring that ads are properly displayed, and, in some cases, selecting advertisements that are based on your interests. If you do not allow these cookies, you will experience less targeted advertising.

These third-parties use cookies, web beacons, pixel tags and similar tracking technologies to collect and use certain information about your online activities, either on our Sites, other sites or mobile apps (e.g., referring/exit pages/URLs and/or platforms), to infer your interests; help us understand usage patterns for certain content, services advertisements, promotions and/or functionality on our Sites;  and deliver you targeted advertisements that are more tailored to you based on your browsing activities and inferred interests (“Interest Based Advertising”). For more information about this practice, click here: http://www.aboutads.info/choices.

Our third-party service providers may also use cookies or web beacons to collect information about your visits to our Sites and other sites to measure and track the effectiveness of advertisements and our online marketing activities (for example, by collecting data on how many times you click on one of our ads). The information collected by these third-parties does not include Personal Information.

Other tracking technologies

fTLD and its third-party service providers may use other similar technologies from time-to-time, such as web beacons, pixels (or “clear gifs”), and other tracking technologies. These are tiny graphic files that contain a unique identifier that enables us to recognize when someone has visited our Sites or, in the case of web beacons, opened an e-mail that we have sent them. This allows us, for example, to monitor the traffic patterns of users from one page within our Sites to another, to deliver or communicate with cookies, to understand whether visitors navigated to our Sites from an online advertisement displayed on a third-party website, to serve targeted advertisements to you and others like you, to improve site performance, and to measure the success of marketing campaigns. While you may not have the ability to specifically reject or disable these tracking technologies, in many instances, these technologies rely on cookies to function properly; accordingly, in those instances, declining cookies will impair functioning of these technologies.

Other Cookies served through Services

Email campaigns

We automatically place single pixel gifs, also known as web beacons, in email campaigns. These are tiny graphic files that contain unique identifiers that enable us to recognize when emails have been opened or clicked on.  These technologies record the email address, IP address, date, and time associated with each open and click for a campaign. We may use this data to create reports about the performance and use of an email campaign.

Retargeting email campaigns

In our retargeting emails when a user clicks a link within a retargeting email, the campaign drops a fTLD cookie on that user’s device that is placed through a JavaScript tracking snippet (“Snippet”). This cookie allows fTLD to track attribution rates and browser activity and provide reporting to the user regarding the success of their product retargeting emails.  To refuse these cookies, please follow the instructions below under the heading “How can I control cookies?”

Facebook/LinkedIn/Twitter and other social media ads

Our ad networks and partners allow us to display ads to you and others within those platforms. When a user elects to use this feature, fTLD installs a tracking pixel or a Snippet. The Snippet also allows that the fTLD cookie to recognize our Site visitors via ads placed with these platforms.  These tracking technologies facilitate the placement of advertising campaigns on these platforms and enable fTLD to analyze the performance of the advertising campaigns. Some platforms may not provide an opt-out link for its cookies. Please refer to the Privacy and Cookie Policies of those platforms, for more information. To refuse these cookies, please follow the instructions below under the heading “How can I control cookies?”

Other cookies

If a user elects to fTLD Services, the use of those Services may permit or require additional cookies or tracking technologies to be employed. If a user engages fTLD Services requiring cookies or tracking, fTLD installs a Snippet or similar tracking technology on that user to allow cookies, pixels, and other technologies to facilitate the use of certain automations, features, and functionality offered by fTLD.
